Understanding Generational and Personal Curses

What Do We Think a Curse Is?

When the subject of a “curse” comes up, what do you usually think of?

For most of us, it brings up an image like this:

  • A witch standing over a cauldron

  • Making potions

  • Casting spells

  • Speaking curses

And honestly, it feels like that is all a curse is… right?

Yes, this is a real example.
But there is so much more to understand.

The curses we often connect with witchcraft and the occult are only one part of the bigger picture.
They are the action side of curses—but not the full understanding of how curses truly operate in our lives.

Why Understanding Hebrew Matters

To truly understand generational and personal curses, we need to go deeper.

In Scripture, it is important to study the original Hebrew words.
This helps us see the full meaning behind what God is saying.

One English word—“curse”—is actually translated from several different Hebrew words.
Each one reveals a different dimension.

To understand the roots of curses and remove wrong thinking, we need to look at the five most commonly used Hebrew words.

The Five Hebrew Words for “Curse”

1. Qalal (Strong’s Hebrew 7043)

  • To make something less than it should be

  • To treat someone lightly or with dishonor

  • To bring into contempt or slander

  • To set a trap or push someone off their path

This is not always dramatic—it can be subtle.
It often works through influence and redirection.

2. Arar (Strong’s Hebrew 779)

  • To bind

  • To surround with obstacles

  • To render powerless

This is the effect of a curse—it restricts and blocks forward movement.

3. Alah (Strong’s Hebrew 423)

  • Speaking words meant to undo someone

  • Declaring something harmful verbally

  • Cursing through speech

4. Naqab (Strong’s Hebrew 5344)

  • To pierce

  • To blaspheme

  • To wound deeply (often through words)

5. Qabab (Strong’s Hebrew 6895)

  • To stab with words

  • To speak harmfully

  • To make someone feel empty or hollow

Important Note About These Words

  • The last three (Alah, Naqab, Qabab) share the same root meaning

  • They all focus on undoing, emptying, and damaging through words

  • These are the words most often connected to:

    • Occult practices

    • Witchcraft

    • Sorcery

Why These Words Matter So Much

Understanding which word is used in Scripture helps us see what is actually happening spiritually.

Let’s look at real examples.

1. Balak and Balaam: When Curses Turn Into Blessings

Balak, the king of Moab, asked Balaam to curse Israel.

But here’s something important:

  • Balak asked Balaam to “arar” (render powerless)

  • Balaam told God he was asked to “qabab/naqab” (curse through harmful words or spiritual action)

Scripture

Numbers 22:5–6
Numbers 22:10–11

What Happened Next?

Balak expected curses…

But instead, blessings came out of Balaam’s mouth.

Numbers 23:8–11

Balaam said:

  • How can I curse what God has not cursed?

  • How can I denounce what God has not denounced?

The Deeper Truth

Even when someone intends harm:

  • If God has blessed you

  • No curse can override His blessing

Numbers 23:20–24

Key Insight

What God blesses cannot be reversed.

Even when spoken words try to:

  • Pierce

  • Undo

  • Destroy

God’s covering remains stronger.

2. God’s Promise to Abraham

Now we come to a very important Scripture.

Genesis 12:3

Original Meaning (Simplified)

Let’s rewrite this verse using the Hebrew meanings:

Genesis 12:3 (explained)
God says:

  • I will bless those who bless you

  • And I will:

    • Bind

    • Surround with obstacles

    • Render powerless

Anyone who:

  • Pushes you off your path

  • Lures you away

  • Keeps you from your God-given purpose

Why This Matters Today

Through Messiah Y’shua, we are connected to this covenant.

This promise is still relevant.

What Does It Mean to Be “Qalal-ed”?

To “qalal” someone is to:

  • Push them away from God’s path

  • Influence them wrongly

  • Distract them from their purpose

This can happen in everyday life.

Real-Life Examples

1. Parents

  • Do not teach God’s ways

  • Do not model a godly lifestyle

  • Prevent their children from walking in purpose

Result:

  • They become restricted and limited

2. Leaders or Pastors

  • Teach false doctrine

  • Compromise truth

  • Mislead others

Result:

  • Their influence becomes powerless over time

3. Prophetic Ministry Misuse

  • Speaking from the flesh instead of God

  • Giving wrong direction

  • Leading others off course

Result:

  • Their ministry loses authority

A Powerful Reality

This explains why some:

  • Ministries fade

  • Leaders fall

  • Influence disappears

Because they have, knowingly or unknowingly:

  • Directed people away from God’s path

A Message of Comfort—and Warning

This truth carries two powerful messages:

✅ Comfort

God promises:

  • He will protect your path

  • He will deal with those who try to hinder you

⚠️ Warning

We must be careful:

  • Not to mislead others

  • Not to influence wrongly

  • Not to push someone off God’s purpose

The Book of Deuteronomy

Life, death, blessing, and the truth about choices

Life and Death Set Before Us

Deuteronomy 30:19

God says:

  • He calls heaven and earth as witnesses

  • He sets before us:

    • Life and death

    • Blessings and curses

And then He gently invites:

  • Choose life, so that you and your children may live

What Deuteronomy Teaches Us

The entire Book of Deuteronomy—especially Chapter 28—focuses on:

  • Blessings

  • Curses

  • The results of our choices

God clearly places two paths before us:

✅ LIFE

  • Obedience

  • Blessing

  • Alignment with His ways

⚠️ DEATH

  • Disobedience

  • Consequences

  • Separation from His ways

The Hebrew Word Behind the Curse

In this passage, the word used for “curse” is:

Arar (Strong’s Hebrew 779)

This means:

  • To bind

  • To hem in with obstacles

  • To render powerless

Understanding God’s Heart

It is important to understand this deeply:

God is never revengeful or malicious toward His children.

The “curse” is not about punishment in anger.
Instead, it is the natural result of choosing against Him.

When we choose disobedience:

  • We step out of alignment

  • We lose strength and covering

  • We become limited

As a result:

We do not walk in the fullness God has designed for us.

A Truth That Continues Into the End Times

This principle does not stop in the Old Testament.

It continues all the way to the end.

Y’shua (Jesus) will separate:

  • Those who are blessed

  • Those who are cursed (arar – rendered powerless)

Scripture

Matthew 25:31–34

  • The Son of Man comes in glory

  • The nations are gathered

  • He separates people:

    • Sheep (right side)

    • Goats (left side)

  • The blessed inherit the Kingdom

A Sobering Reality

Matthew 25:41

  • Those on the left are called “cursed”

  • They are sent away from His presence

The Core Principle

Let’s make it simple and clear:

  • Blessing = Obedience = LIFE

  • Curse = Disobedience = DEATH

Focus on the Right Thing

This is very important:

We should not focus only on:

  • Blessings

  • Curses

Instead, we focus on:

The choice between life and death

This Choice Started in the Beginning

Genesis 2:9

From the very beginning, God placed before humanity:

  • The tree of life

  • The tree of knowledge of good and evil

This represents:

  • Life and blessing

  • Death and consequences

So… What Is a Curse, Really?

When we look at all the Hebrew meanings together, we see one clear theme.

A curse is:

  • A limitation

  • A restriction

  • A barrier

It affects our ability to reach our fullness in Messiah Y’shua (Jesus).

What Curses Do in Our Lives

Curses can be:

  • Big or small

  • Strong or subtle

But they all do the same thing:

  • Hinder

  • Block

  • Bind

  • Chain

  • Stop progress

A Gentle Picture to Understand It

A curse can feel like:

  • A dark cloud following you

  • An overcast sky over your life or family

It creates:

  • Heaviness

  • Repetition of struggles

  • Lack of breakthrough

Another Way to Define a Curse

A curse can also be described as:

  • A dark shadow or evil influence from the past

  • A negative atmosphere surrounding your life

Or even more deeply:

The favor of God turning away, where His covering and sustaining promise is no longer fully active.

Do Curses Just Happen?

Proverbs 26:2

Scripture tells us something very important:

  • A curse does not just land randomly

  • It does not come without a cause

The Law of Cause and Effect

Curses are not mysterious or accidental.

They are connected to something.

The Cause of Blessing

  • Listening to God (Sh’ma)

  • Obeying His voice

  • Following His Instructions (Torah)

The Cause of a Curse

  • Not listening

  • Not obeying

  • Choosing disobedience

The Root Issue: Disobedience

At its core:

A curse is the result of stepping outside of God’s ways.

Three Root Causes of Curses in Scripture

When we study deeper, we see three specific areas that guarantee consequences when violated:

1. Involvement in the Occult

  • Witchcraft

  • Sorcery

  • Spiritual practices outside of God

2. Involvement in Bloodshed

  • Violence

  • Murder

  • Shedding innocent blood

3. Sexual Iniquity

  • Sexual sin outside of God’s design

  • Moral compromise

What Comes Next

In the next part of this journey, we will go deeper into these three roots:

  • Understanding them clearly

  • Recognizing them in real life

  • Learning how freedom begins

The Nature of a Blessing or a Curse

How words carry spiritual power across generations

What Is the Medium of a Blessing or a Curse?

A blessing or a curse mainly comes through one powerful channel:

Words

These can be:

  • Spoken

  • Written

  • Whispered or muttered

Why Words Matter So Much

Words are not “just words.”

They become:

  • Containers of supernatural power

  • Carriers of spiritual influence

And once released:

  • They continue to have effect

  • They remain active

  • They operate until they are cancelled

Time Is Not a Limitation

This is something many people do not realize:

  • Words spoken today can affect tomorrow

  • Words spoken in the past can affect generations

Both blessings and curses can:

  • Travel through family lines

  • Remain active over time

How Do You Recognize a Curse?

The answer is simple, but powerful:

You look at the fruit.

What is showing up consistently in your life—or your family?

Patterns reveal what is operating beneath the surface.

A Deeper Insight

A curse is often not one single event.

It reveals itself through:

  • Patterns

  • Cycles

  • Repetition over time

A Gentle Reminder

Not every struggle means there is a curse.

But when patterns repeat—over time, across generations—it is worth asking:

What is the root behind this?

Where This Leads Us Next

Now that we understand:

  • The power of words

  • The fruit of curses

  • The patterns to recognize

The next question becomes:

What is God’s point of view?

And more importantly:

How does freedom begin?

God’s Point of View

Seeing generational patterns through His eyes

We Think Individually… God Thinks Generationally

In today’s world, especially in the Western mindset, we often think like this:

  • “It’s my life.”

  • “I am responsible for myself only.”

  • “What others did does not affect me.”

This sounds logical to us.
But this is not how God sees it.

God Sees Families, Not Just Individuals

God does not only look at one person at a time.

He sees:

  • Families

  • Bloodlines

  • Generations

How often do we read in Scripture:

“I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob”

This shows us something deeply important:

  • God sees us as part of a continuing story

  • A family line that stretches across generations

Time Works Differently With God

To God, time is not the same as it is to us.

What feels long to us is short to Him.

For example:

  • God promised Abraham the land of Canaan

  • This promise was fulfilled many generations later

Scripture references:
Genesis 15:7–8, 16
Exodus 12:40–41

You Existed Before You Were Born

God planned each of us from the foundation of the world.

This means:

  • We existed in His mind

  • We were already part of His plan

The Bible even gives us a powerful picture of this.

The Example of Levi

Hebrews 7:9–10

Levi is described as:

  • Paying tithes through Abraham

  • Even though he was not yet born

Why?

Because:

  • He was already in Abraham’s lineage

  • He existed within him

What This Means for Us

Just like Levi:

  • We are connected to our family line

  • We are affected by what came before us

This includes:

  • Blessings

  • Iniquity

Both Blessing and Iniquity Can Be Inherited

God sees us as:

  • Part of our family

  • Linked to our ancestors

So we can receive:

  • The blessings of those before us

  • The effects of their sin

But There Is Hope

We are not trapped.

We can shed the iniquity.

God provides a way for freedom—but it begins with:

Seeing things from His perspective

A Gentle Question

Are we willing to:

  • Lay down our own viewpoint

  • And receive God’s view instead?

God’s Nature: Mercy and Justice

When we first hear about generational consequences, our heart may respond like this:

  • “That’s not fair.”

  • “Why should I suffer for what others did?”

This is honest—but incomplete.

To understand, we must look at God’s nature.

Who God Says He Is

Exodus 34:6–7

God describes Himself as:

  • Merciful

  • Gracious

  • Slow to anger

  • Full of loving-kindness and truth

He:

  • Forgives sin

  • Keeps mercy for thousands

But God Is Also Just

He does not ignore sin.

He says:

  • The iniquity of the fathers can affect children

  • Even to the third and fourth generation

What This Really Means

God is always:

  • Good

  • Loving

  • Just

He is ready to forgive—as soon as His conditions are met.

But if they are not:

  • His justice remains

  • The effects continue

How This Affects Families

Because of God’s justice:

Children can experience:

  • Pressure from inherited iniquity

  • The effects of generational patterns

  • Possible curses connected to past sin

A Hard Truth… and a Hopeful One

The hard truth:

  • We can be affected by our parents’ sins

The good news:

God has provided a way to be completely free

Personal Responsibility Still Matters

Ezekiel 18:4–9

God makes something very clear:

  • Every soul belongs to Him

  • Each person is responsible for their own choices

A righteous person:

  • Walks in God’s ways

  • Does what is right

  • Lives

The Example of the Wicked Son

Ezekiel 18:10–13

A son who:

  • Chooses violence

  • Chooses sin

  • Chooses injustice

Will face the consequences of his own actions.

The Example of the Righteous Son

Ezekiel 18:14–18

A son who:

  • Sees his father’s sin

  • Chooses a different path

  • Follows God

Will:

Live and not carry the punishment of his father

The Deep Truth

You may inherit patterns…

But you are always given a choice.

God Makes a Way for Freedom

From the beginning, God has provided a solution.

Through the sacrificial system—and ultimately through Y’shua (Jesus):

  • Sin can be forgiven

  • Guilt can be cleansed

Revelation 13:8

What God Requires

God’s requirement is simple, but powerful:

  • Confession

  • Repentance

Why Confession Matters

If a father sins:

  • That sin remains “unresolved”

  • It can affect future generations

Until:

  • It is confessed

  • It is repented of

  • It is cleared

The Key to Restoration

1 John 1:9

God promises:

  • If we confess our sins

  • He is faithful

  • He is just

And He will:

  • Forgive

  • Cleanse

  • Restore

God Does Not Change

His truth, His standards, and His mercy remain the same

God Is Always the Same

This is a foundational truth:

God does not change.

Some people believe:

  • God’s requirements only applied to Israel

  • The Law and commandments are not relevant today

But when we look at Scripture, we see something different.

God Judges All Nations by the Same Standard

God did not only speak to Israel.

In the Books of the Prophets:

  • God spoke judgment over many nations

  • Not just Israel, but surrounding peoples

This shows us:

  • All nations are measured by the same scales

  • God responds when sin reaches its limit

  • Especially when there is no repentance

Y’shua Confirms This

Y’shua (Jesus) speaks about nations being judged.

Matthew 25:32–33

He describes:

  • Sheep nations

  • Goat nations

This shows:

  • There are godly and ungodly groups

  • All are judged by God’s standards

We Are Made in His Image

Genesis 1:26–27

Because we are created in God’s image:

  • We are called to reflect His nature

  • His character applies to all people

No matter:

  • Nation

  • Background

  • Time period

God’s Nature Never Changes

Hebrews 13:8

  • Jesus is the same:

    • Yesterday

    • Today

    • Forever

James 1:17

  • God does not change

  • There is no shifting or shadow in Him

The Clear Conclusion

Every person is subject to:

  • God’s laws

  • Blessings

  • Curses

And we can see this reality:

Just by looking at life around us

The Importance of Appropriation

Receiving what Jesus has already done

The Honest Question

Some may ask:

  • “Why dig up the past?”

  • “Didn’t Jesus already pay for everything?”

The Beautiful Truth

Yes—Y’shua (Jesus) did:

  • Take God’s judgment

  • Carry God’s wrath in our place

Scripture references:
Romans 5:9–10
Ephesians 2:5
1 Thessalonians 5:9

But Here Is the Real Question

Have we personally received what He has done?

What Does “Appropriate” Mean?

It means:

  • To personally receive

  • To apply

  • To make it active in your life

Freedom Requires Participation

To walk in freedom, we must:

  • Confess our sins

  • Confess the sins of our fathers (when needed)

  • Break their power through Jesus

Salvation Works the Same Way

Salvation has been available for thousands of years.

Yet:

  • No one is automatically born saved

We must:

  • Receive it by faith

  • Accept it personally

Everything in God’s Kingdom Works This Way

The same is true for:

  • Healing

  • Deliverance

  • Finances

  • Direction

  • Spiritual gifts

  • Love

All are received by:

Faith

The Seed Must Be Received

Mark 4:3–20

  • The Word is like seed

  • It must fall into good soil

  • It must be received and grown

Faith Is the Key

Hebrews 11:6

  • Without faith, it is impossible to please God

Sometimes:

  • We receive by our own faith

  • Sometimes through someone else’s faith

But always:

It is by faith

What Jesus Has Already Done

Colossians 2:14

Jesus:

  • Cancelled the record against us

  • Removed the legal accusations

  • Nailed it to the cross

The Good News

This means:

  • The power of past sin can be broken

  • Generational effects can be stopped

But we must:

Receive and apply this truth by faith

The Question of Fairness

Why life doesn’t feel fair—and what God has done about it

“It’s Not Fair”

Many people feel this deeply.

And honestly:

  • Life is not fair

It hasn’t been fair since:

  • The Garden of Eden

But God Made a Way

Even in an unfair world:

  • God provided justice

  • God provided mercy

Through the Cross:

  • A way of freedom was created

True Fairness Comes From God

God’s justice means:

  • Sin requires a cost

God’s mercy means:

  • He paid that cost for us

You Can Start a New Line

Through the Cross:

  • You can break generational patterns

  • You can stop the flow of consequences

And begin:

A new inheritance

The Greatest Gift You Can Give

The greatest inheritance is not money.

It is:

  • Freedom

  • Healing

  • Blessing

Passed to:

  • Your children

  • Their children

Fathers… and Mothers

Who shapes the generational story

What Does “Fathers” Really Mean?

In Scripture, “fathers” includes:

  • Fathers

  • Mothers

  • Grandparents

  • Entire family lines

Everyone contributes to:

  • Blessings

  • Iniquity

Ahab and Jezebel

A powerful example of generational impact

What Happened?

1 Kings 16:30–31

  • Ahab did great evil

  • He married Jezebel

  • She came from an idolatrous family

The Root Problem

  • Baal worship

  • Influence of false gods

  • A cursed lineage (Genesis 10:15; Genesis 9:25–27)

The Result in the Next Generation

1 Kings 22:51–53

Their son:

  • Followed both father and mother

  • Continued in sin

  • Deepened the generational pattern

The Lesson

Both:

  • Fathers

  • Mothers

Shape what flows through a family line.

Did Mary Pass Iniquity to Jesus?

Some believe:

  • Only fathers pass iniquity

But Scripture points differently.

Jesus Was Fully Human

Hebrews 4:15

  • He was tempted in every way

  • Yet without sin

Why This Matters

Iniquity is:

  • The tendency to sin

  • The pressure toward sin

Jesus experienced:

  • Real temptation

  • Real pressure

But He chose:

Not to sin

He Entered Legally Into Humanity

John 10:1
1 Corinthians 15:45–47

  • Born through a woman

  • Entered fully into human experience

The Beauty of This Truth

Because He experienced:

  • Temptation

  • Struggle

  • Pressure

He can now:

Hebrews 2:14, 17–18

  • Understand us

  • Help us

  • Deliver us

The Law of Judgment

Sowing and reaping in motion

God’s Standard of Justice

Exodus 21:23–25

  • Life for life

  • Eye for eye

  • Tooth for tooth

What This Reveals

God established a principle:

What is sown is reaped

  • Evil produces evil

  • Good produces good

Why We Needed Jesus

This law would trap us all.

Because:

  • No one is perfect

  • We could not escape it

God’s Mercy Made a Way

Romans 5:6
Ephesians 2:12

Jesus came to:

  • Fulfill the law

  • Break its power

The Key to Freedom

We are free by:

  • Faith

  • Receiving what Jesus has done

God’s Heart Is Mercy

Ezekiel 18:30–32

God says:

  • Repent

  • Turn away

  • Receive a new heart

What God Truly Desires

  • Not destruction

  • Not punishment

But:

Life

Jesus and the Torah

Matthew 5:17

Jesus:

  • Did not remove God’s Word

  • He fulfilled it

A Warning

Rejecting God’s Word leads to:

  • Confusion

  • Deception

  • Losing the path of life

Two Paths Into Idolatry

1. Cultural Assimilation

Deuteronomy 5:6
Judges 2:12

  • Adopting other beliefs

  • Leaving God’s ways

2. Wrong Worship

Deuteronomy 5:8

  • Creating images

  • Changing God’s instructions

A Modern Form

Mark 13:22

  • False prophecy

  • Spiritual deception

The Root Leads to These Outcomes

Idolatry produces:

  • Occult involvement

  • Bloodshed

  • Sexual iniquity

Understanding Generations

The Weight of Four Generations

Exodus 20:5

Within four generations:

  • 30 people influence one person

That includes:

  • Parents

  • Grandparents

  • Great-grandparents

The Bigger Picture

Each of them:

  • Also received from previous generations

This stretches back to:

  • Adam and Eve

Without God… There Would Be No Escape

But God planned:

Revelation 13:8

  • The Lamb from the beginning

How Generational Patterns Are Passed Down

1. Genes and DNA

  • Genetic information carries traits

  • Can include weaknesses and disorders

2. Environment

  • Family atmosphere

  • Early life experiences

  • Emotional imprinting

3. Sowing and Reaping

Genesis 1

  • Seeds produce after their kind

  • Patterns repeat

4. Demonic Influence

  • Spiritual oppression

  • Patterns transferred across generations

The Reality

Often, it is a combination of all these:

  • Genes

  • Environment

  • Spiritual laws

  • Spiritual influence

Final Reflection

You are not stuck—you are positioned

You may have inherited:

  • Patterns

  • Pain

  • Pressure

But you have also been given:

  • Authority

  • Truth

  • Freedom through Jesus

The Turning Point

You can be the one who:

  • Breaks the pattern

  • Stops the cycle

  • Starts a new legacy

What ran in your family can stop with you.
And what flows from you can become blessing.

Maybe you didn’t just read this.

Maybe you recognized something.

A pattern.
A weight.
A quiet knowing that says:

“This didn’t start with me… but maybe it can end with me.”

And if you feel that… you’re not behind.
You’re not too late.
You’re right on time.

And then there are the children…

The ones watching.
The ones feeling everything.
The ones growing inside the atmosphere we create.

Not just learning what we say

But absorbing what we live.

So I didn’t want to create just another workbook.

I created spaces.

Small, intentional worlds where children don’t get shaped by pressure…
but by peace.

🌴Island Boundaries
A soft and playful journey where children begin learning:

  • what feels safe

  • how to lovingly say no

  • how to protect their peace in a loud world

Like building their own little island… where calm is protected and safety matters.

🛡️Bravehearts Who Choose Light
A steady invitation into courage and discernment.

Children are guided to:

  • recognize truth

  • confidently turn away from darkness

  • grow in the Fruit of the Spirit

  • stand secure in who they are in Christ

Not from fear… but from clarity and confidence.

🌙Little Dreamers
A gentle space designed for rest, peace, and bedtime rhythms.

Through calming practices and faith-filled reflection, children are encouraged to:

  • feel safe as they fall asleep

  • recognize God’s presence

  • experience peace in quiet moments

Where bedtime becomes soft, safe, and covered in peace.

🌬️Workbook for Anxiety
Created for children who feel deeply and carry big emotions.

With grounding exercises and calming guidance, children learn to:

  • return to peace when emotions rise

  • understand what they are feeling

  • regulate gently without overwhelm

Because big feelings deserve gentle spaces to land.

Little Prophets
A beautiful invitation into listening, discernment, and creative expression with God.

Children are encouraged to:

  • recognize God’s voice with wisdom and safety

  • grow in confidence

  • express what they sense in healthy and grounded ways

Not pressured.
Not performative.
But nurtured with care.

🕊️Deliverance Starts at Home
A thoughtful and intentional guide created for parents and families.

This workbook helps families:

  • cover their homes spiritually

  • cultivate peaceful environments

  • recognize and break unhealthy generational patterns

  • build homes rooted in truth and Biblical wisdom

Led with gentleness.
Grounded in truth.

🌿A Closing Note

This collection is not simply something to complete.

It is something to live inside of.

A quiet rhythm where:

  • truth is planted

  • hearts are softened

  • peace becomes familiar

  • and little lives are formed intentionally over time

Where what once felt overwhelming…
becomes gentle again.

Where children are not only taught—
but lovingly shaped in truth, peace, wisdom, and identity in Christ.
